Attendance

At Thomas Arnold Primary School we believe it is very important for your child/ren to come to school everyday.

Our school target is 96.75%. 

Pupils are rewarded for their attendance, below is a brief description of the rewards process.

The class with the best attendance each week in Key Stage will receive a class attendance certificate during achievement assembly.

The class with the best punctuality each week in Key stage will receive a certificate during achievement assembly. 

A class achievement 100% attendance for the whole week will receive a class reward. 

 

Stages for Attendance and Punctuality  

Please refer to the Flow Chart below for the the process for Attendance and Punctuality at Thomas Arnold. This phased process is to make the procedures for our Attendance Policy transparent. We believe that by providing you with this information it will support you in understanding the frameworks that all state maintained schools need to comply with. 

 

Please remember Thomas Arnold Primary School does not authorise holidays during term time.

 

Attendance Flow Chart

 

Stage 1 

Your child’s attendance is between 97.00% and 95.00%

What will happen?

  • Letter home- Stage 1 letter (TAPS AT1)
  • Monitor attendance.

 

Stage 2

Your child’s attendance is between 94.99% and 91.00%

What will happen?

  • Letter home- Stage 2 letter (TAPS AT2)
  • Meeting Parent Panel with Family Liaison/Attendance Officer.
  • Action Plan agreed with Parents/Carers
  • School monitors attendance based on Action Plan.

 

Stage 3

Your child’s attendance is now between 90.99% and 86%

What will happen?

  • Persistent Absentee  Letter home-  (PA Letter)
  • Attendance CAF opened- external agencies incl. Support workers, Social workers invited to Professionals Meeting.
  • Contact Family Doctor.
  • A penalty charge Warning Letter from the Local Authority for poor attendance. (TAPS AT3).

 

Stage 4

Your child’s attendance is now between 85.99% and 84%

What will happen?

  • A penalty charge notice through the Local Authority of £60 will be issued for your child’s poor attendance. (TAPS AT4)
  • Home visit by Attendance Officer.
  • Contact Family Doctor.

 

Stage 5

Your child’s attendance has still not improved and is now  83.99% or below.

What will happen?

This is a measure of last resort after the school has supported Parents/ Carers in improving attendance.

  • School will write a FINAL Letter informing parent of decision to seek Legal Intervention (TAPS AT5)
  • The school will apply for a Court Summons through the Local Authority
  • A court date will be set and  Parents/ Carers notified by Court Sherriff
  • You will need to appear before a magistrate to explain your child’s poor attendance.

Punctuality Flow Chart

 

Stage 1

Your child is late.

What will happen?

Letter home warning you the school has noted the late arrival of your child (TAPS Pu1)

 

Stage 2

Your child is late over a period of 6 sessions in 6 weeks.

What will happen?

  • A second reminder of your child being late. (TAPS Pu2)

 

Stage 3

Your child continues to be late over a period of 8 sessions in 6 weeks

What will happen?

  • Parent/ Carer invited to meeting with Family Support worker (TAPS Pu3)
  • At meeting agree Action Plan with school to improve punctuality- consider accessing Breakfast Club provision
  • School will monitor and track punctuality

 

Stage 4

Your child continues to be late and has now met the threshold of 12 sessions in 6 weeks late arrival.

What will happen?

  • The Local Authority will be notified about these late sessions-
  • A final letter of intention will be sent to Parents/ Carers informing of the school decision to seek Legal Action to issue a fine. ( TAPS Pu4- Letter of Intent)
  • A fine of £60 will be issued against you by the Local Authority
  • The school will the complete a Referral to Social Services re: Attendance and Punctuality
